Collection: Reflections
This collection is my homage to the art community who understood my obsession with a particular shade of blue. I was fascinated by a dream I had about ‘the blue’ and became obsessed with seeing it in real life. In three years of searching the skies and water, I have rarely seen it. The few times were always on a clear autumnal evening, just as dusk became night.
Listening to Daybook by artist Anne Truitt I discovered Truitt was also fascinated by a shade of blue she seldom saw. This led me to having conversations with other creatives who also shared their love of particular shades of blue. Through them I learned of artist Wilhelmina Barns-Graham’s glacier paintings and Mark Cousins who created an installation about Barns-Graham’s work. Reflections is my homage to the people who get it.
These are self-balancing vessels, each vessel has its own centre of gravity where it comes to balance and stillness. The movement when gently rocked reflects the changing skies and movement of water.
The vessels were created by applying different shades and opacities of blue powders to clear sheet glass and fusing them before repeating this process on the reverse side. The pieces were then slumped through an aperture to transform the 2D glass into a 3D form. Each vessel is then removed from the rim and cold worked using a flat lapidary wheel and hand-finishing techniques to create a smooth finish.
